Ask the tree experts

What does "cabling" and "dead wooding" mean?

Jeff Gomez from 43017

Cabling is securing large hazardous branches to other locations in the tree. This technique will reduce the hazard. We like to say cabling is like buying insurance for your tree.

Deadwooding is removing dead branches from a tree. Usually we remove dead branches that are 2" and larger. Getting all the dead wood is not practical and small branches that fall generally do not cause damage. We can remove smaller branches if needed.
