Ask the tree experts

I have a beautiful Japanese Maple Tree it is 10 feet high. This past winter due to heavy snowfall, the snow split the two main branches down the center, The split is approximately 1 inch open at the top and 6 inches long. (The tree is in full bloom now).
I know that bugs and bacteria can get into the split and in time could kill the tree.
Could I fill the split in with a wood filler to seal up the split, if not do you know what I can do to solve this problem. Thank you.

The research has found that filling a split or other decay has no effect on the recovery or the rate of decay. The tree recovers by a process call compartmentalization. It is a natural process. I would suggest taking action to stop the split from increasing. I would place a small cable in the tree. Make the cable tight enough to stop the split. You can use picture frame wire. Place the cable in the upper third of the canopy on opposite sides of the split. Run the wire through hose to stop the wire from touching the tree bark.
